2018 Holiday Gift Guide
If you’re on a quest to find the perfect, unique gift for a loved one (or for yourself!), we’ve got you covered with the 2018 WINGS WorldQuest Holiday Gift Guide.
From our Fellows' latest books to social-impact fashion, home products and coffee, there’s something on the list for everyone.
For the Cartography Hobbyist
WINGS Fellow Marie Tharp gained notoriety for her work mapping the ocean floor and for discovering the Mid-Oceanic Ridge Rift Valley. Marie died in 2006, but her maps live on. You can purchase one here, and 100% of the proceeds go directly to WINGS.
For the Avid Reader
It’s been more than two years since it was published, and Lab Girl by WINGS Fellow Hope Jahren is still a book club favorite. Other books to have on your reading list: Lands of Lost Borders by Fellow Kate Harris, a memoir about her experience cycling the Silk Road, and Antarctica: Earth’s Own Ice World by Rosaly Lopes, about the similarities between Antarctica and other planets. Both Kate and Rosaly carried the WINGS Flag while while on expedition for their books. There’s also African Twilight: The Vanishing Rituals and Ceremonies of the African Continent by Fellows Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher. And for the kids – Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean's Most Fearless Scientist about WINGS Fellow Eugenie Clark, and She Found Fossils, which features WINGS Fellow Bolortsetseg Minjin.
For the Feminist Fashionista
Consider a statement sweatshirt – of the stylish sort – for the femme féroce in your life from woman-owned Sold Out NYC. Just hold tight a little longer, as the new collection launches December 4. But don’t wait too long, because from December 4 through 15, Sold Out will donate 20% of the proceeds of your order to WINGS. To make it count, forward your order confirmation to wewanttohelp@soldout.nyc with “WINGS” in the subject line.
For the Caffeine Addict
Need a gift for someone who turns into a wild animal without their morning coffee? Conservation Through Public Health, an organization founded by WINGS Fellow Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, recently launched Gorilla Conservation Coffee, a social enterprise that pays a premium to coffee farmers living near the gorillas around Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Supporting the local farmers helps protect the endangered gorillas and their habitat.
For the World Traveler
Roaming Man provides easy-to-use Wi-Fi hotspot devices that work in more than 130 countries.
If you use this link to buy or rent a device between now and December 16, 30% of your purchase will be donated to WINGS! And if you use the link after December 16, 15% of your purchase will be donated. Bon voyage and KIT with that wifi!
For the Environmentalist
Plastic straws suck. Aluminum straws and bamboo utensils are in. And how about a Jenga set made from discarded fishing nets for the family? 5 Gyres, a non-profit co-founded by WINGS Fellow Anna Cummins, has a chic and useful plastic-free shopping guide for no-guilt on-the-go dining, fashion and fun.
For the Jewelry Enthusiast
Temple St. Clair has been designing jewelry since launching her eponymous company in 1986. Her Lion Cub Collection features earrings, pendants and other items made in the image of big cats. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the Lion Cub Collection go to Lion Guardians, a non-profit founded by WINGS Fellow Leela Hazzah that is dedicated to saving lions.
For the One Who Still Sends Snail Mail
Early this year, the United States Postal Service issued a set of commemorative stamps featuring photos of bioluminescent creatures that generate their own light, several of which were taken by WINGS Fellow Edie Widder, to help draw attention to their wonders and to the environmental problems that threaten them in marine habitats. The set of stamps is sold out, but you can still purchase other limited edition collectibles, including a keepsake shadow box.
For the Adventurer
For a limited time, when you join our Sponsor an Explorer campaign, you’ll get WINGS gear as a thank you. Keep it for yourself, or gift to someone who inspires your inner explorer. This campaign is hosted by the WINGS WorldQuest Junior Council, a group of young women committed to the mission of WINGS and passionate about enabling extraordinary women to achieve and discover in the field sciences and exploration.
