WINGS Fellow Erin Pettit Invites Teenage Girls to Apply now for Girls on Ice 2011 Expedition:
If you are a girl between the ages of 15 and 18 – and you like being outdoors – check out Girls on Ice. It takes place on a frozen glacier in the North Cascades and is a great way to learn more about science and about being a leader, too. You don’t need to be an athlete, just a curious, open-minded person who wants to learn more about the study of glaciers, mountaineering and the confidence that comes from learning how to take care of yourself in a wilderness environment.
You’ll be part of a small team of girls led by professional female scientists and mountaineers who will give you all the personal attention and support you’ll need to succeed. Many girls who have participated in Girls on Ice are amazed at how comfortable they felt within a group of new friends and how fast they gained confidence.
Girls on Ice, a tuition-free wilderness science education program led by Glaciologist Erin Pettit, a 2007 WINGS awardee, is accepting applications for its 2011 expedition July 25–August 4 on Mt. Baker, Washington State. Participants will spend 11 days exploring and learning about mountain glaciers and alpine landscapes. Girls age 15–18 are eligible. Applications are due February 15, 2011.http://girlsonice.org/apply.
